Description
Scabies are microscopic mites that can be found in bedding, but also in linens and clothing. Highly contagious, scabies can be transmitted between people through shared towels, bedding, sexual contact, hand-holding, hugging, or sitting close to someone. They are found most commonly in unhygienic, crowded environments.
Scabies burrow into the skin-and prefer the moist skin under the breasts, armpits, buttocks, back of the thighs, groin, soles of the feet, and between fingers and toes. The entry spot actually looks like a very small stab wound that could have been made with a pencil. Although scabies are not dangerous and do not carry disease, they are bothersome and annoying.
Signs and Symptoms
- Itching, especially at night
- Thin, pencil-like marks on the skin
Conventional Medical Treatment
To diagnose scabies, your physician or dermatologist looks for the characteristic burrow marks. Treatment involves a topical lotion containing permethrin, such as Elmite cream. This is typically applied from the chin down and worn overnight. One application usually kills the scabies. Your family members and anyone else you have come in close contact with must also use the product. To avoid being reinfected, all family bedding, clothing, and towels must be washed in hot water.
